Race for Life Rescue marks 200th flight for shelter animal transport
Nonprofit organization Race for Life Rescue has completed 200 flights to relocate shelter animals from overcrowded facilities to new homes.

Race for Life Rescue, an Annapolis-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has reached the milestone of 200 aviation missions dedicated to transporting at-risk shelter animals. The organization has successfully relocated more than 12,000 dogs and cats since its inception, aiming to reduce euthanasia rates in regions with limited shelter capacity.
The group operates across more than 30 states, functioning primarily as a logistical bridge between overcrowded shelters and regions with higher adoption rates. Its operational scope increased significantly following the 2022 response to Hurricane Ian, which highlighted the critical need for rapid animal evacuation in disaster-prone areas.
By leveraging air transport, the organization bypasses the time constraints of ground travel, increasing the chances of survival and adoption for animals in high-intake facilities. The nonprofit relies on donor support and volunteer coordination to sustain its ongoing transport operations.
