Radiation Oncologist Chooses Proton Therapy for Own Prostate Cancer

Radiation oncologist Edward Soffen has undergone proton therapy treatment at ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Somerset, New Jersey, earlier this year. The decision held particular weight as Soffen has over 30 years of experience in the field, possessing expertise in all radiation modalities, including proton therapy.

"I had every option available, and I could have chosen any provider in the world," Soffen stated. He described weighing six different treatment options before ultimately selecting proton therapy. "Protons were the one clear choice—and I have zero regrets about that decision."

Proton therapy's advantage lies in its ability to precisely target tumors and stop radiation at the tumor site, sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Soffen's own cancer was detected early and confined to the prostate, making proton therapy a suitable option for him.

Having decided on the treatment modality, Soffen chose to receive care at the facility where he practices, ProCure. He was familiar with the center's staff and had observed their work and patient-selection process for years.

ProCure Proton Therapy Center, which opened in 2012, was the first proton therapy facility in the tri-state region. It has treated over 8,000 patients for a range of cancers.
