The Rajasthan High Court has initiated a legal process, flagging concerns over the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology on children's learning and development. Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand registered the matter as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), focusing on the welfare and future of "Generation Z, Generation Alpha, and Generation Beta."

The court directed the Union and State governments to file comprehensive action plans regarding AI integration in education and the implementation of screen time limits for children. Observations highlighted that excessive reliance on technology could lead to the extinction of handwriting skills, a decline in reading physical books, and an erosion of independent thought processes.

The High Court suggested equipping village schools with smart classrooms, computers, and internet connectivity, alongside providing digital literacy training. It emphasized that technology should serve as a tool and aid, not a substitute for human intellect. A policy to regulate children's screen time was also requested, referencing World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

According to the court, excessive use of digital devices may hinder cognitive development, affect reading and writing abilities, and shift communication from speech to texting. The court also addressed the needs of gig workers, calling for social security measures and accessible loan procedures for startups.

Furthermore, the court took note of food safety and nutrition in schools, demanding a ban on high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt foods within 50 meters of school gates, mandatory nutritional labeling, and the availability of healthy food options in school canteens. The Rajasthan State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and District Collectors have been asked to respond within eight weeks.
