Rancher Outmaneuvered Meat Bottleneck Ahead of Government Funding

Steven McBee Jr. has spent nearly a decade building his own system to bypass the bottlenecks in the meat production industry. This development comes as the U.S. government plans to invest up to $500 million to bolster small and mid-sized meat processors.

McBee, 33, known from the television show "Real American Cowboys," has altered the traditional industry model. Historically, ranchers often sold their cattle into the commodity system, accepting prevailing prices and relinquishing control over processing, distribution, and the majority of profits.

"We looked at that and thought, 'Why stop there?'" McBee stated regarding his company's philosophy. "If we wanted more control over our future, we had to own more of the entire chain."

He achieved this by establishing his own vertically integrated solution, encompassing production through to sales. The new government initiative aims to support similar smaller players and increase competition against larger meatpacking corporations.

McBee's proactive approach addresses significant challenges within meat processing, creating a model that is now finding broader support from federal agricultural programs.
