Ransomware negotiator sentenced for colluding with attackers

Angelo Martino, a former ransomware negotiator, was sentenced to 70 months in prison yesterday for colluding with the BlackCat ransomware group. Martino was employed by DigitalMint, a company tasked with negotiating ransom payments on behalf of clients targeted by cybercriminals.

Instead of protecting victims, Martino allegedly provided confidential negotiation details to the attackers to inflate ransom demands. In return, he received a portion of the extortion payments. The U.S. government stated that five victims Martino was supposed to assist paid over $75 million, with millions likely added due to Martino's leaked information.

Martino, 41, pleaded guilty and had requested a 24-month sentence, citing substantial assistance in indicting two co-defendants. These individuals were identified as Kevin Martin, another negotiator at DigitalMint, and Ryan Goldberg, an incident manager at the security firm Sygnia.

This case highlights the vulnerabilities within the cybersecurity industry and the potential for betrayal by those in trusted positions. Martino's actions demonstrate the intricate nature of ransomware schemes and the efforts by law enforcement to dismantle them.
