Razorpay Integrates Indian Brands into ChatGPT

Indian fintech giant Razorpay is collaborating with OpenAI and NPCI to establish a new commerce layer within AI assistant platforms.

The company is building a system that allows merchants to create ChatGPT-integrated storefronts, synchronize their product catalogs, and enable checkout using UPI features such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay.

Razorpay aims to offer merchants a novel channel for customer acquisition. This AI-driven commerce approach could reduce the setup time for a ChatGPT storefront from weeks to approximately 30 minutes for Shopify merchants.

A key challenge for the strategy involves building trust. While consumers may be comfortable asking ChatGPT for recommendations, completing transactions via an AI assistant requires robust security and user consent. Razorpay's architecture is designed to keep payment credentials separate from AI models.

Although ChatGPT is unlikely to replace traditional e-commerce apps or marketplaces in the near future, it could serve as a new layer for product discovery and shopping. Razorpay's success hinges on its ability to assure consumers and merchants of the new model's security and efficiency.
