Realta Fusion to Build Fusion Reactor at Former Hot Dog Factory

Realta Fusion, a company developing fusion energy technology, has chosen the former Oscar Mayer factory in Madison, Wisconsin, to house its new research and development center. The startup spent two years searching for a suitable location before settling on the industrial site.

The facility, named Forge, is slated to produce its first plasma in 2029. Realta Fusion recently demonstrated its ability to convert energy from fusion reactions directly into electricity, a step that could accelerate the path toward commercial fusion power plants.

Factors influencing the site selection included the factory's ample power supply and its proximity to Realta's existing headquarters in Madison. Crucially, the decision was also supported by bipartisan backing from Wisconsin's government, including the governor and legislature.

"Wisconsin really decided they want to throw their weight behind fusion," said Kieran Furlong, co-founder and CEO of Realta Fusion. This development comes as global demand for electricity surges, driven by electrification and the expansion of AI data centers, increasing interest in fusion power.
