This year's El Niño weather phenomenon could become the strongest on record, signaling potential global weather impacts and offering a glimpse of future climate conditions in an increasingly warmer world. The event may temporarily push Earth's monthly global average temperature above the 2-degree Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) mark compared to pre-industrial levels.

The strength of an El Niño is determined by how much ocean surface temperatures rise above average. This warmer water influences the atmosphere, shifting and amplifying weather patterns. This year, El Niño coincides with already high ocean temperatures and a summer of extreme heat. Experts suggest this combination could reveal what a world with a 2-degree higher average temperature might look like.

"The next 12 months could be a real stress test: record heat, extreme weather, crop losses, and cascading impacts," stated Robert Rohde, lead scientist at Berkeley Earth. He described it partly as a preview of the future. Zeke Hausfather, another researcher at Berkeley Earth, refers to El Niño as a "time machine," potentially bringing temperature conditions predicted for 2037 as early as 2026–2027.

However, it is crucial to distinguish the impacts of El Niño from those of greenhouse gas-induced climate change. While the global average temperature might be similar, El Niño's effects are different in nature. El Niño acts more like a "redistribution of heat" within the climate system, leading to localized warming and cooling, as well as shifts in rainfall patterns. Greenhouse gas-driven climate change, conversely, is a more permanent and global warming trend.

While El Niño may not fully replicate the long-term consequences of greenhouse gas-driven climate change, it is bringing more amplified extreme weather events, such as record heat and heavy precipitation, to certain regions than previous El Niños have caused.
