Red Balloon Aerospace aims for stratosphere with advanced balloons
Indian Red Balloon Aerospace is developing novel, long-endurance super-pressure balloons and airships for near-space operations.

Indian aerospace venture Red Balloon Aerospace is positioning itself to capitalize on the stratosphere, developing advanced, long-endurance super-pressure balloons and airships. Founded by former Skyroot Aerospace executives CVS Kiran and Sireesh Pallikonda, the startup is focusing on platforms designed to operate at altitudes exceeding 20 kilometers, targeting applications in communication, earth observation, and disaster management.
In May 2026, the company successfully launched its maiden super-pressure balloon, Vista, engineered to remain aloft for months rather than hours. Unlike conventional weather balloons, Vista is designed to withstand the harsh stratospheric environment, characterized by extreme cold and radiation.
"One of the biggest barriers to operating in near space is the environment itself," stated founder CVS Kiran. "The thin air at higher altitudes doesn’t provide enough oxygen for conventional aircraft, and temperatures can plunge to as low as -80°C, demanding materials that are both ultra-lightweight and exceptionally durable."
Red Balloon aims to offer a more cost-effective and persistent alternative to satellites, drones, and terrestrial networks. The founders believe the stratosphere can serve as a new infrastructure layer for emerging technologies such as 6G and real-time earth observation.
The company also plans to develop free-flying aerostats and solar-powered airships, dubbed Helix, designed for extended station-keeping. These platforms, coupled with an AI-powered analytics platform named Dive, are intended to streamline data processing and decision-making, particularly in disaster response scenarios.
