Reddit blocks 26 posts in India following unidentified government order

Reddit has restricted access to 26 posts in India citing a government takedown request that failed to specify the legal basis or the issuing agency.

Reddit has blocked 26 posts in India primarily concerning the India–China border, complying with a government order that provided no legal citation or agency identification. The notice, filed by Reddit with the Lumen Database, left the "laws or regulations" field blank and listed the sender as redacted.

The blocked content spanned 18 subreddits and included discussions on border skirmishes, satellite imagery of Chinese infrastructure, and cartographic disputes. According to the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), much of the content was already publicly available through Indian news reports. Because Reddit blocks content by URL, entire comment threads associated with the posts were also rendered inaccessible to Indian users.

Legal experts argue that the lack of procedural transparency undermines the rights of Indian internet users. Without knowledge of the law cited or the agency responsible, creators have no clear mechanism to challenge the censorship. While the posts remain visible to audiences outside of India, the case highlights the opacity of the country's Section 69A IT Act enforcement, which critics say operates with minimal public scrutiny.
