Reddit CEO Reports Decline in Google Search Traffic Linked to AI Overviews
Reddit reported a weekly decrease of over one million referrals from Google in October, a trend attributed to the search engine's integration of AI-powered search summaries.
During the company's Q3 2026 earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated that Google's AI-powered search tools are failing to generate meaningful traffic for the platform. This development highlights a growing tension between major search providers and content platforms that rely on referral traffic for audience growth.
Huffman noted that search referrals dropped by more than one million per week throughout October. According to the CEO, the implementation of AI Overviews and similar search-based AI features represents a fundamental shift in how Google processes information, effectively keeping users within the search ecosystem rather than directing them to external websites.
This shift reflects a broader industry concern regarding the impact of generative AI on the web traffic economy. As search engines prioritize direct answers, publishers and social platforms face increasing pressure to monetize content without the reliance on traditional referral volume.
