Reddit Joins S&P 500 Index, Stock Price Surges
Social media platform Reddit has been selected for inclusion in the S&P 500 Index. The addition is expected to boost RDDT shares through increased fund trading.

Social media company Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) has been selected for inclusion in the prestigious S&P 500 Index. The news prompted a surge in the company's stock price in premarket trading.
Reddit will replace real estate investment trust AvalonBay Communities in the index, which is being removed due to a merger. The S&P 500 comprises exactly 500 companies, meaning one company must be removed for another to be added.
S&P Dow Jones Indices, the administrator of the S&P 500, selects companies based on stringent financial viability and liquidity criteria. Reddit meets these requirements. The company's official addition to the index is scheduled for before the market opens on Tuesday, August 18.
Reddit's stock price rose over 11% in premarket trading following the announcement. While index inclusion does not directly impact a company's fundamentals, it compels passive index funds and ETFs that track the S&P 500 to purchase shares of the newly added company. This forced buying increases demand and drives up the stock price.
Reddit's share price has seen a significant decline recently. Part of the recent drop was attributed to investor concerns that Google's AI overviews could reduce traffic to Reddit's website. The S&P 500 inclusion is expected to provide short-term support for the stock.
