Regulations for cycling within Sea Pines community on Hilton Head

The 17-mile network of leisure trails in Sea Pines remains a popular destination on Hilton Head Island. However, as a gated community, Sea Pines enforces specific access rules that differentiate its trails from the public pathways maintained by the town.

Pedals Bicycles clarifies that trail use is restricted to property owners and registered vacation renters staying within the gates. Daily visitors are prohibited from cycling into the community from public areas and must instead enter by vehicle, paying a gate fee that increased to $10 in March 2026.

Regulatory restrictions within the community are notable, most significantly a ban on all e-bikes, including pedal-assist models, as well as motorized scooters and golf carts. Cyclists are required to remain on designated trails rather than roads, yield to pedestrians, and observe safety protocols such as maintaining distance from local wildlife, particularly alligators.

For those staying outside the gated community, the island maintains approximately 64 miles of public paths. Pedals Bicycles recommends using standard pedal-operated beach cruisers for any travel within Sea Pines, as these are suited for both the paved trail network and the firm sand conditions found at low tide.
