China's National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) has announced significant progress in its campaign against "AI-modified" videos, reporting the removal of nearly 13,000 non-compliant videos in September. In addition to content removal, over 30 user accounts involved in the distribution of such material were disciplined. These actions are part of a broader initiative that commenced in January 2026 to address the proliferation of manipulated media.

The NRTA has instructed key online audio-visual platforms to enhance their platform responsibilities and strengthen daily content monitoring. The focus is on identifying and removing videos that have been altered using artificial intelligence, particularly those derived from classic literary works, historical and revolutionary themes, and figures. The campaign also targets the removal of various forms of "cult-like" animations.

This specific content governance effort has been conducted on a monthly basis, with results being disclosed to track progress. The overarching objective is to cultivate a healthier and more secure online audio-visual ecosystem within China. The enforcement actions aim to deter the creation and dissemination of deceptive or harmful AI-altered content.

Starting February 1, 2026, the NRTA plans to continue its "AI-modified" video governance through a regularized, institutionalized long-term mechanism. This signifies a shift towards ongoing, systemic regulation rather than distinct, periodic campaigns. Future oversight will be integrated into the standard content management framework for online platforms.
