Reliance Pursues Quick Commerce, Updates on Satellite Internet Plan
Reliance Industries Limited reported strong growth in its quick commerce operations and provided updates on its satellite internet initiatives during its latest earnings call.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) revealed significant strategic developments across its businesses during its latest quarterly earnings call, with a pronounced focus on quick commerce in its retail segment and advancements in its satellite internet technology.
Reliance Retail announced its continued commitment to quick commerce, marking its second attempt at the model, backed by a three-year plan to double the business's Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA). This strategy involves expanding its network of 'dark stores,' growing its omnichannel platforms, and enhancing the JioMart application. The company has accepted a dip in retail margins as a conscious move to prioritize the scaling of digital commerce initiatives.
The company's digital commerce efforts have shown substantial traction. Grocery digital orders surged by 116% year-on-year, supported by a relaunched JioMart app offering deliveries in under 30 minutes for groceries and under two hours for other categories across more than 5,500 pin codes. The fashion quick-commerce service, Ajio Rush, also experienced significant growth, with orders increasing by 136% quarter-on-quarter.
On the telecommunications front, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has received technical approval for its plan to deploy approximately 1,600 low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. These satellites are intended to provide low-latency internet services with a projected capacity of 4.5 to 5 terabits per second. However, the commercial launch of these services is contingent on securing the necessary spectrum allocation from the Department of Telecommunications.
Media and entertainment segments also faced challenges, notably JioStar's advertising revenue, which was impacted by India's ban on advertising for real-money gaming. The company offset this impact by increasing digital advertising, primarily in the entertainment sector. The new regulations prohibiting advertising for real-money games have reshaped the market landscape for gaming and related businesses.
