Remember Me Thursday Movement Promotes Pet Adoption Worldwide
The annual Remember Me Thursday campaign unites people globally to promote the adoption of homeless pets. The initiative highlights the importance of pet adoption and raises awareness for animals awaiting new homes.
The global Remember Me Thursday (RMT) movement is once again shining a light on the importance of adopting homeless pets. The campaign, observed on the fourth Thursday of September, aims to increase awareness of animals in shelters waiting for their forever homes.
RMT was established in 2013 by the Helen Woodward Animal Center in response to the alarming statistic that over one million homeless pets lose their lives annually in the U.S. The initiative has grown from a single organization's call to action into a global phenomenon, engaging hundreds of thousands of animal lovers and over a thousand animal welfare organizations in more than 180 countries.
The movement encourages individuals to share stories of adopted pets on social media or participate in ceremonies honoring the lives of homeless animals. Participation is marked by using the hashtags #ShineALight and @RememberMeThursday. Celebrities, such as actress Alicia Silverstone, have supported the campaign over the years, boosting its visibility.
Alicia Silverstone joins a roster of notable figures who have backed the campaign, including Kristin Chenoweth and Kaley Cuoco. Silverstone has been a vocal advocate for animal rights and a plant-based lifestyle for decades. She emphasizes that Remember Me Thursday serves as a crucial reminder that these animals are worthy and deserve to be chosen for a home.
