Report: Meta's Muse AI builds detailed dossiers on users and their contacts

Meta's AI assistant Muse creates continuously updated dossiers on users and people they mention, tracking relationships and behavioral patterns, according to a Time Magazine report.

8 October 2026

A new report reveals that Meta's AI assistant Muse systematically collects detailed information on its users and their contacts. Internal instructions reviewed by Time Magazine indicate that Muse logs social relationships, shared interests, disputes, and behavioral patterns.

Muse, positioned as a personal assistant to perform digital tasks, accesses parts of a user's digital life, including email and Instagram. The instructions require Muse to maintain detailed records of users and their contacts, including individuals who do not use Muse themselves, as information about them can appear in others' conversations. The assistant reportedly updates these dossiers hourly and is instructed to strengthen its relationship with the user by identifying "inside jokes" and shared context.

The report further states that Muse attempts to infer users' goals, even those not explicitly stated. The assistant analyzes daily conversations and saves information deemed relevant for serving the user. Muse also tracks how individual users respond to different interaction types and shares lessons learned with other Muse agents in anonymized form to improve the product.

Meta has not disputed the report's findings. A company spokesperson told Time that Muse operates in a dedicated virtual machine and that data is not shared with the company's advertising system. Meta also stated that users control their Muse and can ask it to "forget" information. The company plans to implement encryption that would prevent even Meta from accessing Muse data.
