Republican candidates reduce references to Donald Trump in campaign advertising

As the November 3 election nears, Republican congressional candidates are increasingly omitting President Donald Trump from their campaign messaging. AdImpact data indicates that between September 9 and October 17, less than 1% of television spending for these candidates featured the president, a significant drop from earlier in the cycle when over 70% of broadcast ads referenced him.

This shift in strategy follows declining approval ratings for the president, which recent Reuters/Ipsos polling places at approximately 31%. Candidates across the country, including those in heavily Republican states, have removed presidential imagery and references from campaign websites to avoid association with the administration.

While candidates previously courted Trump's endorsement during primary elections to secure support, the current political climate has prompted a tactical pivot. Many representatives are now actively avoiding joint appearances or publicly opposing specific policies, such as immigration enforcement or ongoing military engagements, to differentiate their platforms from the president.

The divergence between the president's own campaign activities and those of individual congressional candidates underscores a broader effort within the party to insulate campaigns from the president’s low public approval as the midterms conclude.
