Research Suggests Umbilical Cord Tissue May Improve Spinal Pain
New observational research involving 117 patients indicates that allografts derived from human umbilical cord tissue may reduce pain and improve function in thoracic and lumbar spinal patients.

An observational study published in Biomedicines analyzed 117 patients who received allografts of cryopreserved human umbilical cord tissue for thoracic and lumbar paraspinal defects.
The research, conducted across 11 clinics, tracked patients receiving one to three applications of the allograft for paraspinal degeneration confirmed by imaging. Patient-reported outcomes were measured using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC).
Authors reported reductions in average NPRS and WOMAC scores from initial to final visits. Statistically significant differences were noted in several analyses for patients receiving multiple applications. No adverse events or complications were observed during the study.
The study authors suggest the collagen-rich extracellular matrix in umbilical cord tissue resembles paraspinal connective tissue, potentially explaining the allograft's supportive role for degenerated tissue.
