Researcher Continues Online Hate Monitoring Despite Deportation Threat

A noncitizen technology researcher focused on online hate speech continues their work monitoring the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, despite the threat of deportation. This activity comes after a US judge in July blocked an immigration policy that the government had used to detain and deport noncitizen researchers flagging safety risks on major online platforms.
US District Judge James Boasberg ruled against the policy, citing a lack of evidence presented by the government. The policy, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aimed to prevent foreign nationals from manipulating digital spaces and censoring Americans. However, Judge Boasberg found no proof that the targeted researchers were linked to foreign powers seeking to influence US public debate.
The judge deemed the policy overly broad, stating it could inadvertently ensnare any noncitizen involved in content moderation. The Coalition for Independent Technology Research (CITR) had supported the researchers in challenging the policy.
The researcher's continued monitoring highlights the ongoing tension between government efforts to control perceived foreign influence and the work of independent researchers analyzing online content.
