Researcher Warns AI May Crack Bitcoin's Encryption

A researcher for the Ethereum Foundation has issued a warning that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence could potentially compromise Bitcoin's digital signature system. Justin Drake urged the blockchain industry to "calmly begin planning for ‘bunker mode’," citing recent mathematical breakthroughs by AI agents.

Drake's concerns stem from findings released by OpenAI, which he suggests indicate the arrival of mathematical superintelligence. He questioned on social media whether Bitcoin's 64-byte ECDSA signatures, which secure transactions, are as robust as believed, or if their security has relied on obscurity.

The warning has met with skepticism from some industry figures. Isabel Foxen Duke, head of the Mara Foundation, stated that there is no direct evidence that AI's success in solving other mathematical problems puts cryptography at risk. Yehuda Lindell, Coinbase's head of cryptography, characterized Drake's post as "fear mongering."

Drake had previously warned the industry about threats from quantum computing. His latest post suggests a shift in focus, indicating that AI may represent a more immediate concern for Bitcoin's long-term security.
