A team at the Beijing Institute of Technology, led by Xin Tang and Ge Mu, has developed night vision goggles capable of rendering infrared light in full color. Unlike conventional night vision devices that typically convert infrared into shades of green, this new technology translates different infrared wavelengths into distinct colors within the visible spectrum, approximating natural vision.

The device combines mercury telluride colloidal quantum dots, which absorb infrared light, with a dual-layer OLED display that converts the absorbed energy into visible color. This integration allows incoming infrared radiation to be seen as a standard, full-color image.

This advancement could significantly enhance night vision capabilities for applications in security, rescue operations, and military contexts, providing improved situational awareness and detailed observation in low-light conditions.

The development addresses the limitation of human eyes, which do not naturally perceive the infrared portion of the light spectrum because infrared photons lack sufficient energy to trigger the signaling pathways in light-sensing cells.
