Researchers Develop Handheld Device to Measure Fat Burning via Breath
A research team has created a handheld device that measures fat metabolism by analyzing acetone levels in exhaled breath. The technology aims to provide more precise insights into the body's fat utilization than current methods.

A research team led by Andreas Güenther has developed a handheld device designed to monitor fat metabolism through a person's breath. This new technology aims to offer users a more direct and accurate understanding of when their body begins to burn fat for energy, addressing limitations in current body fat estimation tools like smart scales and watches.
The device operates by detecting the concentration of acetone in exhaled breath, a byproduct released when the body enters a state of ketosis and starts metabolizing fat. A study published in the scientific journal "Device" demonstrated that the handheld device's measurements closely aligned with traditional laboratory-based testing of fat metabolism, with 12 participants undergoing various dietary and exercise regimens.
While acetone in breath is a known indicator of fat metabolism, laboratory accuracy has been hindered by factors like humidity and breathing patterns. The research team has incorporated moisture and contaminant filters into their device and developed a companion app to guide users. This app helps regulate breath intensity and sample collection timing, aiming to achieve results comparable to blood tests.
The technology is now being commercialized under the name Nutrion. Potential applications include monitoring the effectiveness of GLP-1 therapies for weight management and enabling athletes to more accurately adjust training and metabolic states.
