Researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the Technical University of Denmark have developed a novel "thermal cloak" that can render objects invisible to infrared detection in three dimensions.

The device successfully concealed an object from infrared detection while simultaneously protecting it from extreme temperatures. Previous experimental thermal cloaking devices could only operate in two dimensions or along a single direction of heat flow. This new cloak utilizes the theory of "transformation thermodynamics," where a tailored material structure manipulates heat flow around the protected area.

The manufacturing process involved 3D printing to create intricate lattice structures, which were then filled with a low-thermal-conductivity rubber-like material. In laboratory tests, the device was placed between cold and hot regions, and infrared cameras confirmed that the object within the cloak was virtually undetectable to external observers due to its thermal signature.

This level of cloaking effect was achieved even with highly complex three-dimensional geometric structures, exceeding the capabilities of previous experimental devices. The researchers believe the technology has applications in thermal management for sensitive electronics, as well as in defense and security sectors. Future work aims to develop "smart" thermal cloaks that can respond dynamically.
