Researchers identify non-lethal pain management compound

A research team at University of South Florida Health, led by Laura Bohn, has reported the discovery of a compound, SR-17018, capable of relieving pain in animal models without causing respiratory depression. This finding is significant as respiratory failure is the primary cause of fatalities during opioid overdoses.

The study, originally published in the journal Cell, indicates that SR-17018 does not lead to the high tolerance levels associated with traditional opioids. Findings suggest the compound may even allow subjects dependent on morphine to reset their tolerance levels without experiencing the onset of withdrawal symptoms.

Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the project highlights ongoing efforts to mitigate the risks inherent in pain management medications. University researchers have filed a patent for the compound as they continue to evaluate its clinical potential.
