Researchers propose new location for lost 1897 polar expedition message

A research group from Chalmers University of Technology, the Karolinska Institutet, and Stockholm University has released new findings regarding the lost correspondence of the 1897 Andrée polar expedition. The letter, intended for Nils Strindberg’s fiancée, was dropped from the hydrogen balloon Örnen shortly after its departure from Svalbard but has never been found.

By re-evaluating meteorological data, eyewitness accounts from 1897, and Strindberg’s personal diary entries, the researchers conclude that the balloon drifted further east than historical records previously suggested. The team posits that the tin containing the message likely landed on the island of Klovningen, instead of the neighboring Fuglesongen, where searches have historically focused.

Björn Lantz of Chalmers University noted that these findings provide a basis for potential future search efforts. While environmental factors pose a risk to the preservation of the tin, the researchers argue that a targeted expedition to Klovningen could provide definitive answers regarding the contents of the message and the expedition's final objectives.
