Researchers Track $80 Million in AI-Generated Political Ads for Midterms

The 2026 U.S. midterm campaigns have seen a significant rise in AI-generated political advertising, with researchers tracking around $80 million spent on nearly 170 unique AI-enhanced ads. This marks the first election cycle where artificial intelligence is regularly featured in campaign messaging across television and social media.

The Wesleyan Media Project's study found that AI usage spans from hyperrealistic deepfakes to subtle visual enhancements. Republican sponsors, including candidates and interest groups, were far more likely to employ AI than their Democratic counterparts. They accounted for 80% of the tracked ads and 83% of the spending. Researchers speculate this partisan gap reflects broader party philosophies on regulation versus free-market approaches.

A significant concern highlighted by the research is the lack of disclosure for AI-generated content. Due to a patchwork of state legislation, many ads did not clearly indicate the use of AI. Only 31% of the tracked ads, representing 22% of the spending, disclosed AI usage, with varying disclaimer language or none at all.

The prevalence of AI in political ads has raised voter concerns, with polls indicating strong support for regulations. The ability to create deceptive deepfakes of politicians or generate artificial crowds presents challenges for voters in discerning truth from falsehood, potentially impacting the integrity of the electoral process.
