Residents voice concerns over new power line plans in Dresden

Transmission system operator 50Hertz Transmission GmbH is planning a new 380-kilovolt power line to support the infrastructure needs of northern Dresden. The project is a response to projections that electricity demand in the city will triple by the mid-2030s, largely driven by the expansion of the semiconductor industry.

Regional authorities have assessed the project’s compatibility with local land use, leading to a recommendation that deviates from initial plans. Instead of selecting a single route, authorities are prioritizing a combination of corridors A and D, running north from the Altwilschdorf substation. This route is designed to bypass key areas while utilizing existing infrastructure, such as rail lines.

During a recent public consultation in Großdobritz, residents raised concerns about the impact of the proposed lines on nearby settlements. 50Hertz is also evaluating an alternative route, known as 'E,' which would avoid protected bird habitats but result in increased deforestation. Detailed assessments are ongoing, with final decisions expected in the coming months.
