Resilience in Food Systems Becomes Increasingly Crucial
The global food system's ability to withstand disruptions like climate shocks and supply chain issues is highlighted as critical for food security. Cargill emphasizes the need for stability.

Ensuring Food Security Amidst Disruptions
Cargill, a global leader in agriculture and food, has released an analysis underscoring the growing importance of resilience within the global food system. The report posits that a system's capacity to endure disruptions—such as climate change-induced extreme weather, supply chain bottlenecks, and rising costs—is vital for the continuous availability of safe and affordable food.
"The food system is set up to feed billions of people efficiently. Most of the time it does so quietly," stated Lauren Bresnahan, Cargill's chief economist. She emphasized that when the system falters due to market volatility, strained infrastructure, or disrupted trade routes, the consequences are felt immediately, highlighting the necessity for more robust food systems.
According to Cargill, a rapidly growing global population exacerbates pressure on food security, with an estimated 500 million more people needing to be fed by 2030. Concurrently, climate change increases agricultural risks through more frequent floods, droughts, and heatwaves. The system's stability is further weakened by limited support and unequal access to markets and finance for smallholder farmers, who produce a significant portion of the world's food.
Cargill is working to bolster resilience worldwide, operating in 70 countries with supply chains reaching 125 markets. The company supports farmers through training, tools, and market access, including regenerative agriculture programs. Cargill also partners with organizations like CARE and Solidaridad to improve livelihoods and productivity for smallholder farmers, particularly women. Healthier soils and more efficient water use in agriculture are also key strategies to mitigate drought-related challenges.
Cargill stresses that resilience in the food system is built through deliberate choices, with progress accelerating when existing, successful solutions are scaled. The company aims to foster this by ensuring food continues to move efficiently from farms to consumers' tables, even during times of disruption.
