Restaurant Charges Parents for Children's Damages

Chez Xue, a restaurant in California, has initiated a policy holding parents financially responsible for damages caused by their children on the premises. The policy, which has gained viral attention, details incidents such as a shattered credit card machine, carvings on a tabletop, and a broken teacup, with corresponding charges levied against the parents.

The restaurant has publicly listed specific charges: $327.03 for a damaged credit card machine, $109.38 for carvings on a table, and $5.47 for a broken teacup. Chez Xue clarified its stance, stating it is a family-friendly establishment but not a playground, and expects children to remain seated and respectful of other diners and the dining environment.

Etiquette expert Elaine Swann has commented on the situation, largely supporting the restaurant's approach. Swann indicated that parents are typically liable for damages, particularly in cases involving intentional actions like carving or allowing children to handle sensitive equipment like payment terminals. She also suggested the policy reflects a broader societal shift in parenting approaches in public spaces.

According to the restaurant's stated policy, guests who do not adhere to the rules may be asked to leave. Chez Xue emphasizes its intention to maintain a pleasant dining experience for all patrons by enforcing these guidelines, which include expectations for children's behavior such as remaining seated and avoiding disruptive noise.
