Review: Robot Lawn Mowers Improve but Still Require Oversight
New robot lawn mower models offer significant advancements in navigation and terrain handling, reducing yard maintenance workload. However, they still necessitate human supervision.

Robot lawn mowers have reached a point where they can considerably reduce the effort involved in yard maintenance. While not entirely autonomous machines that require zero oversight, they are capable of handling a substantial chore without constant human intervention.
Recent tests indicate substantial improvements in navigation and maneuverability for robot lawn mowers. Issues like getting stuck or wandering into neighboring yards have been significantly mitigated. These machines operate by trimming millimeters of grass daily, contributing to a consistently lusher lawn without causing significant noise disturbances.
Key upgrades include network RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) positioning, fallback navigation systems, and enhanced all-wheel drive for tougher terrain. RTK technology utilizes satellite positioning and ground-based reference stations for centimeter-level accuracy. Newer models often employ NetRTK, which leverages cloud connectivity and requires the mower to have a Wi-Fi or 4G connection, eliminating the need for a private base station installation.
Despite progress, robot lawn mowers are not without flaws. Their ability to detect obstacles such as hoses, cables, and small objects remains limited, and they can still damage lawns or other items. Opening and closing gates also continues to require manual intervention. Furthermore, the high cost of these devices and their reliance on cloud services raise questions about long-term reliability and operational expenses.
Among the tested models, the Segway Navimow X430 stood out for its capability to navigate challenging terrain without getting stuck. Its four-wheel drive and effective suspension allowed it to traverse uneven surfaces and overcome obstacles.
