Reykjavik Continues Phase-Out of Studded Tires
Reykjavik has measured a decrease in studded tire usage following the April 15 deadline, although usage remains higher than last year.

Reykjavik is continuing its efforts to reduce the use of studded tires, a measure implemented to mitigate road wear, noise pollution, and air quality degradation. The city has set a deadline of April 15 each year for the removal of studded tires.
On April 17, 2024, a measurement indicated that 30% of vehicles were still equipped with studded tires. This represents a decrease from the 38% recorded in March. However, the figure is significantly higher than the 20% observed during the same period last year.
Studies and measurements in Reykjavik have consistently shown that studded tires contribute significantly to pavement abrasion, generating considerable noise and releasing fine particulate matter into the air. These factors negatively impact urban living conditions and infrastructure maintenance costs.
The transition away from studded tires is influenced by seasonal changes and weather conditions. While the approach of summer typically brings warmer temperatures and increased rainfall, which encourages the switch to non-studded tires, spring weather in the capital region can be unpredictable.
Reykjavik authorities are monitoring the situation and aim to further reduce studded tire use in the coming years through public awareness campaigns and potential policy adjustments.
