Reykjavik to open shared street Naustin in December
The city of Reykjavik is finalizing the conversion of Naustin into a shared street space. The project includes major utility upgrades and is scheduled to open this December.

Reykjavik City and Veitur Utilities are completing the reconstruction of Naustin, which will open as a shared street this December. The project aligns with the approved traffic plan for the Kvosin district, designed to integrate vehicle and pedestrian movement within a unified corridor.
The project involved significant infrastructure improvements, including the replacement of utility lines and the installation of a dual municipal sewer system to enhance stormwater drainage. To ensure year-round accessibility, a snowmelt heating system has been installed throughout the street.
Designed by Landmótun, the new street features a level surface with integrated greenery, tree beds, and a multipurpose stage area. Lota managed the lighting design, utilizing mast-style lamp posts intended to improve pedestrian safety and visibility. The street serves as a connector between Hafnarstræti and Tryggvagata.
