Reykjavík’s Environment & Planning Council has approved a policy shift regarding parking near Hallgrímskirkja. The update extends tariff zone 2, mandating payment for all parking spaces throughout Skólavörðuholt, including the previously partially free area between the Reykjavík Technical College and the church.

According to city officials, the move aims to address parking shortages identified during peak demand periods. By standardizing fees across the area, the city seeks to discourage long-term parking and improve space availability for visitors and service users. The proposal was reviewed and approved by the capital area police under current traffic regulations.

The new regulations will align this area with the operational hours and fee structure of existing tariff zone 2. The changes will be implemented following the publication of an official notice in the national gazette and the subsequent installation of new signage.
