Reykjavík, Iceland – The City of Reykjavík has announced tightened COVID-19 restrictions, effective immediately on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. The new measures were prompted by recent cluster infections identified as the UK strain of the coronavirus, known for its increased transmissibility.

Primary schools and music schools will be closed, while preschools will operate under modified regulations. Children born before 2015 are exempt from these specific closures. On Thursday, March 25, Reykjavík preschools will be closed until noon to allow staff to organize operations.

Several public facilities and cultural venues will also be affected. This includes the closure of swimming pools, the Geothermal Beach at Nauthólsvík, ski resorts, and the Family Park and Zoo. Museums in Reykjavík will remain open but with a capacity limit of 10 visitors. All scheduled events, including those at libraries, are cancelled. Contact sports, both indoors and outdoors, are prohibited.

City welfare service centers will remain open, but with restricted visitor access. Residents are encouraged to utilize phone and email for appointments rather than direct walk-ins. Senior centers will continue services without catering, though home meal delivery is available. Other city departments will adhere to existing emergency plans and limitations to prevent further spread of the virus.
