RFK Jr. names 8 new members to preventive medicine task force

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the appointment of eight new members to the 16-person US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). This federal panel is responsible for developing scientifically independent, evidence-based recommendations on a range of preventive medicine services for Americans, including screenings for depression, statin use, colonoscopies, and mammograms.

The USPSTF's recommendations significantly influence how preventive services are covered by health insurance. The task force uses a rigorous framework to evaluate evidence and assigns grades from A to D to services. Health insurance providers are mandated to cover services rated A or B at no cost to the patient.

Kennedy has previously faced criticism for delaying the USPSTF's operations for over a year, canceling meetings and not replacing outgoing members. In May, he also dismissed two leaders of the task force. These actions have fueled concerns that he intends to politicize the nonpartisan panel by appointing members aligned with his views, echoing similar criticisms regarding his influence on vaccine advisory committees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
