Rheinmetall Acquires Dutch Startup REEQ for Vehicle Portfolio Expansion
German defense technology company Rheinmetall has acquired Dutch startup REEQ. The deal expands Rheinmetall's portfolio of electric and autonomy-ready light tactical vehicles.

German defense technology group Rheinmetall has acquired the Dutch startup REEQ, expanding its vehicle portfolio to include innovative light hybrid vehicles.
The acquisition, completed in early March 2024 by Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V., a subsidiary of Rheinmetall, adds electric drivetrain technology to the company's offerings. REEQ specializes in a new generation of light tactical vehicles that combine tactical transport capabilities with a mobile energy source, known as a microgrid, and are designed for autonomous operation.
REEQ's current vehicle lineup includes an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), a side-by-side buggy, and a quad bike, all utilizing the same fully electric drivetrain. Rheinmetall plans to leverage its industrial strength and REEQ's innovative capabilities to further develop and produce these vehicles in the Netherlands.
This move is seen as a response to calls from Dutch authorities to bolster the domestic defense industry and enhance strategic autonomy in key technologies like electrification and autonomy. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. REEQ will continue to operate as a startup within the Rheinmetall Group.
