Rheinmetall and GM Defense Deliver Prototypes for U.S. Army Truck Program
American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense have delivered three HX3 CTT prototype trucks to the U.S. Army for the first phase of the Common Tactical Truck program.
German defense contractor Rheinmetall and GM Defense have delivered three prototype trucks to the U.S. Army as part of the Common Tactical Truck (CTT) program. The initiative aims to replace the Army's current fleet of heavy tactical trucks, with a potential value of up to $14 billion.
American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense formed a strategic partnership in 2022 for this program. Their offering, the HX3 CTT, is based on Rheinmetall's successful HX family of trucks, utilized by several NATO nations. The vehicles are designed to enhance soldier safety and capability through advanced technologies, including driver assistance systems (ADAS), improved off-road mobility, and cybersecurity.
The new prototypes feature enhanced on- and off-road mobility, integrated protection, and an open digital architecture that supports autonomous driving and allows for rapid technological upgrades. By leveraging technology from GM's commercial vehicle offerings, the trucks aim to reduce accidents and improve fuel efficiency.
The program plans to produce up to 40,000 new trucks and offers the potential to utilize a global distribution network and commercial parts system, which could lower lifecycle costs.
