Rheinmetall Completes NVL Acquisition to Expand Naval Capabilities
Rheinmetall has finalized the acquisition of NVL, Lürssen's military vessel business, becoming a comprehensive system provider in naval defense. The deal closed on March 1, 2026.

German technology group Rheinmetall has completed its acquisition of NVL, the military business of the Lürssen group. The transaction, initially announced in September 2025, has received all necessary antitrust approvals and officially transferred on March 1, 2026. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
This strategic move establishes Rheinmetall as a system house for the development and production of modern naval vessels, coast guard boats, and autonomous maritime systems. The acquisition significantly expands Rheinmetall's capabilities in the maritime domain, solidifying its role as a full-range provider of defense technology in Germany and Europe.
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, stated that the acquisition positions the company as a relevant player across land, sea, air, and space domains. "By combining the competencies of Rheinmetall and NVL, we are creating a powerful, complete supplier for state-of-the-art surface vessels," Papperger explained.
Rheinmetall aims to address the growing demand for naval defense solutions, driven by current geopolitical conditions and increased defense budgets. The company plans to offer integrated system solutions, encompassing platforms, electronics, sensors, and effectors, supported by advanced digital infrastructure.
