German defence company Rheinmetall has confirmed that Telford, United Kingdom, will be the site for its new large calibre gun barrel production facility. Production is slated to commence by 2027, marking the return of sovereign manufacturing capability for these vital defence components to the UK, which was lost in 2016.
The investment is projected to generate over 400 direct and indirect jobs through the supply chain. Rheinmetall plans to inject more than £400 million into the UK economy over the next decade. The new facility will utilize British steel and advanced manufacturing techniques to produce next-generation barrel systems for both UK and allied platforms.
This facility is part of Rheinmetall's broader strategy to enhance its industrial footprint in Britain. The company has already committed over £70 million in investments aimed at strengthening domestic defence capabilities. The project is a key element in Rheinmetall UK's plan to support the modernization of the British Army and the UK's role in bolstering NATO's collective defence readiness.
Rheinmetall has already placed orders for long-lead manufacturing equipment to ensure timely progress. The facility will also support the British Army's transformation programs by delivering interoperable systems to NATO nations and reinforcing the UK's position within the defence industrial landscape. The company is also expanding its collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within its global supply chain.
