Rheinmetall Expands Defense Cooperation with Ukraine

German technology group Rheinmetall is expanding its role as a key defense industry partner for Ukraine, providing significant military equipment and logistical support. The strategic cooperation was further solidified with a memorandum signed in Berlin in June 2024 between Rheinmetall and Ukraine's Ministry for Strategic Industries.

The agreement outlines plans for joint artillery ammunition manufacturing and the supply and local production of Lynx infantry fighting vehicles. Beyond direct deliveries, the partnership intends to foster Ukraine's domestic defense industry for sustainable capabilities. Rheinmetall established a joint venture, Rheinmetall Ukrainian Defence Industry LLC, in October 2023 with a Ukrainian state-owned company to train specialists and maintain combat vehicles.

Rheinmetall is supplying Ukraine with substantial quantities of various ammunition types, including hundreds of thousands of 155mm artillery rounds. The company is positioned as the sole defense contractor capable of providing large volumes of medium and large-caliber ammunition. Furthermore, Rheinmetall and Ukraine have declared their intent to produce six-figure annual volumes of 155mm rounds at a Ukrainian "Center of Excellence for Ammunition."

In terms of combat vehicles, Rheinmetall has delivered Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles and Leopard 1 tanks, along with specialized variants, to Ukraine. The company is also working to establish production of its Lynx infantry fighting vehicles within Ukraine through the existing joint venture, with initial deliveries planned in the near future.
