Rheinmetall Expands Kassel Operations with New Logistics and Training Facilities

Defense contractor Rheinmetall has signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government of Hesse to develop a North Hesse Defence Hub. The project includes establishing a new logistics and technology center at Kassel-Calden Airport, expanding Rheinmetall's existing Kassel site, and fostering local development of new defence technologies.

The initiative, supported by funding from the state of Hesse, involves a three-digit million-euro investment. A key component is a logistics center with over 30,000 square meters of floor space, slated for operation by the end of 2027. Rheinmetall stated this facility will enhance its operational capacity for domestic and international orders, shorten processing times, and optimize supply chains and delivery quality.

Further plans involve establishing a drone test center at the new Calden site, with approximately 1,200 square meters dedicated to a training facility. The expansion is expected to create jobs and reduce logistical traffic around the company's current northern Kassel plant, reinforcing the region's role in defense industry and innovation.

Rheinmetall views the investment as strategic in preparation for anticipated future orders in the military vehicle sector, particularly from the German armed forces (Bundeswehr). State officials highlighted the project's importance for regional economic growth and strengthening Germany's defense capabilities.
