Rheinmetall leads autonomous military convoy development
Rheinmetall has assumed responsibility for the InterRoC VII research project, focusing on interoperability and safety in autonomous military convoys.

German defense contractor Rheinmetall has taken over full responsibility for the InterRoC VII (Interoperable Robotic Convoy VII) research project. Commissioned by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), the initiative strengthens the company's role in developing automated military logistics systems.
The project aims to ensure safe and autonomous cooperation between different vehicle platforms under realistic military conditions. The objective is to enhance the efficiency of logistics convoys and reduce personnel risks through the digitalization of military mobility.
Rheinmetall is utilizing its proven HX family of vehicles as the technological basis for the project, equipped with the company's PATH sensor kit and necessary systems for autonomous operation. An open system architecture allows for the integration of new sensors and AI functionalities.
A key development focus is the ability to navigate and operate safely even in environments where satellite navigation (GNSS) is unavailable. This ensures the vehicles' reliability in challenging and electronically contested conditions.
The findings from the InterRoC VII project will also be applied to Rheinmetall's autonomous logistics solutions, which recently secured first place in the 'Convoy Scenarios' competition at the ELROB 2026 event.
