Rheinmetall provides Bundeswehr with access to SAR satellites
Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions has provided the German Armed Forces with direct access to SAR reconnaissance satellites under the SPOCK 1 program. Satellite production has commenced in Germany.

Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions has delivered direct and exclusive access to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) reconnaissance satellites for the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) under the SPOCK 1 program. This marks a significant milestone for Germany's defense capabilities, enabling independent satellite tasking and complementing existing reconnaissance assets.
The program, an acronym for 'SAR Space System for Persistent Operational Tracking, Stage 1', aims for continuous, all-weather satellite surveillance. Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions operates the satellites and expands their constellation. The system will primarily be used for the protection of the brigade in Lithuania and the monitoring of NATO's eastern flank.
Concurrently, production of the SAR satellites has commenced at Rheinmetall's facility in Neuss, Germany. This start of production signifies a transition from the planning and development phase to industrial implementation. The Neuss facility is responsible for the manufacturing, integration, testing, and quality assurance of the satellites.
"Less than a year after the contract was signed, the German Armed Forces are gaining direct access to a dedicated SAR reconnaissance capability. The successful start of production in Neuss demonstrates that we not only provide innovative space technology, but can also scale it up industrially in Germany," stated Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall.
The development of production capacities in Germany strengthens Europe's technological and industrial base for space-based reconnaissance.
