Rheinmetall Secures New Automotive Lightweight Engineering Orders
Rheinmetall has received new orders for automotive lightweight components, including battery trays and cylinder heads for electric and hybrid vehicles, valued in the triple-digit million-euro range.
Rheinmetall's Castings business unit has secured two new orders from the automotive industry, collectively valued in the triple-digit million-euro range. The orders are for cylinder heads and battery trays intended for electric and hybrid vehicles.
The first order comes from a global top-ten automaker, a company that produces internal combustion engine, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles. The second order was placed by a joint venture of the same manufacturer. The orders include several million units of cylinder heads and nearly one million battery trays. The cylinder head order is worth a low triple-digit million euros, while the battery trays represent sales in the low double-digit million euro zone.
Both components will be manufactured in China. Production for the battery trays, which will be used in the automaker's new battery box, is scheduled to begin in 2025 and run for seven years. The cylinder heads will be produced using a gravity casting process, with production starting in 2023 and lasting for four years, intended for hybrid vehicles.
These contracts highlight Rheinmetall's expertise in producing highly complex aluminum cast parts and underscore its expanding role in e-mobility components. The company's ability to meet stringent safety requirements for crash- and certification-relevant parts is critical for their use in high-voltage environments.
