Technology group Rheinmetall is expanding its electromobility business into new application areas with two new independent orders for its plug-and-play heat pump solution. The first new order is a major contract in the high single-digit million euro range from an international expert in electric bus conversions. The second order is from a German expert in off-road electric vehicles and is also worth a single-digit million euro range.

These new orders mark the next milestone in the Group’s marketing and positioning strategy following the market launch of the heat pump module. This module is specifically designed for the electrification of drive systems in commercial vehicles, construction machinery, and boats. The intelligent cooling and heating management of the heat pump, pre-filled with R1234yf, increases vehicle range and battery service life while enhancing driving comfort.

The first customer is converting conventional buses to electric drive. This process involves a comprehensive evaluation of the base vehicle and analysis of operator cycles to develop and validate a conceptual powertrain through simulation. After removing the diesel unit, the engine compartment is scanned and digitized to develop a tailored electrical e-drive platform.

The second customer has designed a stand-alone off-road electric vehicle for the mining industry, now launching series production. Developed with a background in off-road motorsports, the vehicle features a robust design and a 72.5 kWh battery. The design emphasizes sustainable production and a circular lifecycle, focusing on recyclability and degradability.
