Rheinmetall subsidiary receives funding for NanoLam™ capacitor development

Rheinmetall subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology GmbH has secured approximately €1.5 million in funding for the NanoLink project. The facility in Hartha, Germany, will focus on developing innovative production processes for manufacturing high-performance NanoLam™ capacitors.

The project aims to advance production techniques and analytical methods for intermediate circuit capacitors utilizing NanoLam™ technology. These capacitors are identified as crucial components for electric vehicle powertrains, offering significant advantages over current technologies.

The Hartha site hosts Europe's first demonstration facility for NanoLam™ capacitor manufacturing. This technology involves producing dielectric layers in the sub-micrometer range using thermosetting plastics. The resulting capacitors are characterized by increased compactness, lower weight, and higher resistance to temperature and electrical stress compared to conventional polypropylene film capacitors.

The NanoLink project seeks to optimize manufacturing process steps for large-scale production, emphasizing cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency, and automation. The goal is to bring this technology to a broader market, thereby strengthening Germany's position as a global supplier of electric mobility components and enhancing value chain resilience. The project runs from June 2025 to January 2028 and includes partners such as Chemnitz University of Technology.
