Rheinmetall subsidiary secures funding for NanoLam™ capacitor production
Rheinmetall's subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology has secured approximately €1.5 million in funding to develop innovative production processes for its NanoLam™ capacitors, crucial for electric vehicle powertrains.

Rheinmetall's German subsidiary, Pierburg Pump Technology GmbH, has received approximately €1.5 million in public funding to develop innovative production processes for its NanoLam™ capacitors. The funding, sourced from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the state budget of Saxony, will support operations at the company's Hartha site.
The project, named NanoLink, focuses on researching and developing advanced manufacturing processes and analysis methods for the production of advanced intermediate circuit capacitors utilizing NanoLam™ technology. These components are considered key technologies for next-generation electric vehicle powertrains due to their technical advantages over current market standards.
Pierburg Pump Technology's Hartha facility is home to the first European demonstration facility for manufacturing these NanoLam™ capacitors. The technology involves creating dielectric layers in the sub-micrometer range. The resulting product offers significant improvements over conventional polypropylene film capacitors, including greater compactness, lower weight for equivalent capacity, higher temperature resistance, and enhanced voltage stability and thermal conductivity. These characteristics are expected to unlock new application possibilities in electromobility.
The NanoLink project aims to refine individual manufacturing steps for mass production, emphasizing economic viability, energy efficiency, and automation without compromising quality. The consortium includes partners like AKON GmbH, Chemnitz University of Technology, and the Laser Institute at Hochschule Mittweida. The project commenced on June 1, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on January 31, 2028.
