German technology group Rheinmetall has received a significant order from the British Ministry of Defence to upgrade the UK's Challenger 2 main battle tank fleet. The contract is valued at around €770 million (£665 million).

The modernization program, known as the Challenger 2 Life Extension Project (LEP), will convert 148 tanks into the new Challenger 3 standard. Key upgrades include Rheinmetall's 120mm smoothbore main armament and a completely new turret structure with an advanced digital system architecture, aiming to extend the tanks' service life for decades.

Much of the upgrade work will be carried out in the UK at the Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) facility in Telford. RBSL is a joint venture between Rheinmetall and BAE Systems, with Rheinmetall holding a 55% stake. The program is scheduled to take place between 2021 and 2027, bolstering the UK's defense technology and engineering capabilities.

The Challenger 3 will feature Rheinmetall's latest L55A1 smoothbore gun, capable of firing current and future 120mm ammunition. The new turret design will enhance crew survivability and incorporate advanced sensor and fire control systems to improve combat effectiveness and accuracy.
