Rheinmetall wins Bundeswehr tactical network contract
Rheinmetall has secured a multi-billion euro framework contract to build the Bundeswehr's Tactical Wide Area Network (TaWAN LBO). The agreement is a key step in the digitalization of Germany's armed forces.
German defense contractor Rheinmetall has been awarded a significant contract to establish the "Tactical Wide Area Network for Land Based Operations" (TaWAN LBO) for the German armed forces (Bundeswehr). Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH will serve as the general contractor for this extensive communication network project.
The framework agreement has a ten-year term and is valued at several billion euros. An initial order, worth 1.88 billion euros, has already been placed to equip one Bundeswehr division. Deliveries for this initial phase are scheduled between late 2026 and late 2029.
The TaWAN LBO system is designed to be a deployable, platform-based, and interference-resistant communication network, crucial for maintaining command and control capabilities. As part of the contract, Rheinmetall MAN will supply 102 HX 8x8 trucks that will serve as mobile platforms for the large directional radio systems.

This award follows previous contracts within the Bundeswehr's digitalization programs, such as the Digitalised Land-Based Operations (D-LBO). Together, these initiatives aim to modernize the German armed forces' communication infrastructure and enhance their operational effectiveness.
